Post Malone and Kumar Birla: The Singer Who Crossed Every Genre and the Heir Who Rebuilt an Empire

By Jack 28 Min Read

Post Malone and Kumar Birla have no documented connection of any kind. They have never met on any public record, never done business together, and are not related. One is an American singer who started as a rapper, became one of the best-selling recording artists on earth, and then made a country album. The other is an Indian industrialist who inherited one of his country’s oldest business houses at the age of 28 and spent three decades turning it into a global conglomerate.

The pairing circulates because comparison sites match famous names from different worlds, and because readers reasonably ask whether two men this prominent could somehow be linked. They are not, and this article will say so plainly rather than invent a connection. What the two careers do offer, set side by side, is a study in crossing boundaries: Malone crossed every genre line in popular music, and Birla crossed from a protected family business into global markets, new industries and, lately, consumer brands and cricket.

Here is who each of them is, what each actually built, and what the record does and does not show about any link between them.

Who Is Post Malone?

Post Malone was born Austin Richard Post on 4 July 1995 in Syracuse, New York, and raised by his father, Richard Post, and his stepmother, Jodie. His father had been a DJ in his youth and fed the boy a mixed musical diet of hip hop, country and rock, which is the simplest explanation for everything that followed in the son’s career. When Austin was nine, the family moved to Grapevine, Texas, after his father became the manager of concessions for the Dallas Cowboys.

He attended Grapevine High School, where his classmates voted him Most Likely to Become Famous, and worked at a Chicken Express restaurant as a teenager. He learned guitar after playing the video game Guitar Hero, played in local metalcore bands, and at 15 auditioned as a guitarist for the band Crown the Empire, an audition that ended when a guitar string broke. He briefly attended Tarrant County College, dropped out, and moved to Los Angeles with a friend to chase music seriously. His stage name, chosen at 14 or 15, is his real surname plus a surname produced by an online rap name generator. Despite a persistent internet myth, it has nothing to do with the basketball player Karl Malone, who is not his father and not his inspiration.

Post Malone: White Iverson to the Diamond Club

His breakthrough was self-made in the modern style. In February 2015 he uploaded a song called White Iverson to SoundCloud, a hazy track named in honour of the basketball player Allen Iverson. It reached a million views within about a month of its video release, and by August 2015 he had signed with Republic Records. His first album, Stoney, arrived in December 2016 and produced the Diamond single Congratulations. The second, beerbongs & bentleys, came in April 2018, debuted at number one, and put two singles, rockstar and Psycho, on top of the Hot 100.

The numbers since then belong in record books. Sunflower, his 2018 duet with Swae Lee for the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film, became the highest certified song in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America and the first single ever certified double Diamond, at twenty million units. Hollywood’s Bleeding (2019) gave him Circles, a number one that spent 61 weeks on the Hot 100. Twelve Carat Toothache (2022) and the guitar-led AUSTIN (2023) followed, and in August 2024 he completed the genre crossing his childhood predicted: F-1 Trillion, a full country album recorded with Nashville’s biggest names, became his third number one album. The same year he sang with Beyoncé on her Cowboy Carter album, fronted Fortnight, the lead single from Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, and spent six weeks at number one with I Had Some Help, his duet with Morgan Wallen. He also made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, the home of country music, in August 2024.

In total he has collected nine Diamond singles, a number bettered only by Drake, and the RIAA counts more than 150 million certified units in the United States alone. One line of the record needs care, because it is often misreported: Post Malone has been nominated for 18 Grammy Awards and has never won one. His attitude to the categories he keeps crossing was summed up in a New York Times interview in August 2024:

Genres suck. It’s easier to catalog music that way. But at a certain point, and the cool thing is that it’s moving towards this, why can’t you mix all this together and make something that’s truly unique to you?

Music is not his only business. His French rosé, Maison No. 9, launched in May 2020 and sold out within two days. He became an investor in the esports organisation Envy Gaming, collaborated repeatedly with Crocs, and is a serious player and collector of the card game Magic: The Gathering: he owns the unique One Ring card from the game’s Lord of the Rings set, bought for more than $2 million.

Post Malone in 2025 and 2026

The touring years have matched the recording years. In 2025 he headlined the Coachella festival and launched a stadium tour with Jelly Roll that Pollstar ranked among the ten biggest tours in the world that year. In April 2026 he headlined the Stagecoach country festival, the natural home ground of the F-1 Trillion era.

April 2026 also brought the announcement of his seventh studio album, The Eternal Buzz, a 40-track double album. No release date has been confirmed for it, and reports list it for 2027; the start of the second leg of his stadium tour was pushed back by about three weeks while he finished new music. In July 2026 he reached the largest live audience of his life, headlining the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, where he performed alongside Swae Lee, closing a circle that began with Sunflower eight years earlier.

Who Is Kumar Birla?

Kumar Mangalam Birla was born on 14 June 1967 in Kolkata and grew up in Mumbai, in a joint family at the head of one of India’s great business houses. He is the great-grandson of G. D. Birla, the legendary industrialist who was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, and the grandson of B. K. Birla. The family’s business was founded in 1857 by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla at Pilani, in Rajasthan, and by the time Kumar was born it spanned jute, textiles, cement and much more.

Unlike a founder, Birla inherited his position, and the inheritance came brutally early. His father, Aditya Vikram Birla, had taken the group global, setting up plants across Asia when few Indian companies looked abroad. Aditya Vikram Birla was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993 and died on 1 October 1995, aged 51, in a hospital in Baltimore. Kumar, who had studied commerce at the University of Mumbai, qualified as a chartered accountant and taken an MBA at London Business School in 1992, became chairman of the whole group that October. He was 28. Looking back a quarter of a century later, he titled his India Today cover interview with a sentence that explains the man: “I had no choice but to grow up fast.” His mother, Rajashree Birla, remains a central figure in the family’s philanthropy and received the Padma Bhushan in 2011.

Kumar Birla: The Heir Who Rebuilt an Empire

The young chairman’s first work was order: dozens of family companies, each with its own habits, were consolidated under a single name, the Aditya Birla Group, with professional managers and common systems. Then came expansion. In 2004 the group took control of L&T Cement and renamed it UltraTech, building it into India’s largest cement maker. In 2007 his aluminium company Hindalco bought the American producer Novelis for about $6 billion, then the group’s largest deal by far, making it the world’s leading maker of aluminium rolled products. In 2012 he bought the Pantaloon retail business, the start of what became Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail. The World Economic Forum’s profile of him puts the group’s revenue at about $72 billion, with operations in 41 countries.

The hardest chapter was telecom. His Idea Cellular merged with Vodafone India in 2018 to form Vodafone Idea, then India’s largest phone company, which promptly bled money under a price war and government dues. In August 2021 Birla stepped down as the company’s chairman, having offered the group’s stake to the government to keep the company alive. He returned as a director in April 2023. The episode is the clearest test of his reputation for patience: the turnaround he began in 1995 had to be run a second time, in public, on a company the market had nearly written off.

The honours have followed the work. He received the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 2023, and he has been named the Economic Times Business Leader of the Year three times, in 2003, 2013 and 2024. He is also chancellor of BITS Pilani, the university his family founded, and in 2019 he endowed a scholarship programme at London Business School named for his grandfather.

Kumar Birla in 2025 and 2026

At an age when many heirs slow down, Birla has spent the mid-2020s placing the group’s largest bets in a generation, aimed squarely at the Indian consumer. In February 2024 the group launched Birla Opus, a new decorative paints brand, entering a market long dominated by a single rival. In July 2024 it launched Indriya, a jewellery brand backed by an investment of 5,000 crore rupees. At the jewellery launch he explained the thinking: the Indian consumer, he said, is “rapidly coming of age”, and India is “perhaps the most promising consumer cohort globally”.

Succession, the question that defined his own youth, is being handled in the open. His daughter Ananya and his son Aryaman joined the boards of group companies including Grasim and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail in early 2023, and the board of Hindalco in August 2024, learning the business a generation before they may lead it. In December 2025 Birla did something he had avoided for thirty years: he appeared on television, sitting opposite Amitabh Bachchan on the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, with his family in the audience, playing for charity.

The year 2026 brought the two stories together. In March 2026 a consortium of the Aditya Birla Group and Times Internet bought the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket franchise for 16,660 crore rupees, and Aryaman Birla became the team’s chairman. In May 2026 Kumar Birla returned as non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea, days after the government, which had become the company’s largest shareholder by converting dues into shares, cut the dues the company owed. At 59, the heir who took over at 28 is still, unmistakably, the group’s chief strategist.

The Connection Question: Post Malone and Kumar Birla

Is there any real connection between Post Malone and Kumar Birla? On the public record, none. There is no documented meeting between them, no deal, no investment, no sponsorship and no shared platform. No Aditya Birla Group company has any announced relationship with Malone, his label or his tours, and Malone has no announced business interest in any Birla company. Articles elsewhere that hint at a hidden story behind the pairing offer no evidence for one, because there is none to offer.

Even the India thread, the closest their worlds come, does not connect them. Malone performed in India in December 2025, in a reported first solo headline concert in Guwahati, in the country’s north east. No Birla company had any reported role in the show, and no report places the two men at the same event, in the same city, at any time.

The honest parallel is about inheritance of different kinds. Malone inherited nothing but a mixed record collection and built a career by refusing to stay inside one genre. Birla inherited one of Asia’s great business houses and rebuilt it by refusing to stay inside the industries and borders it came with. One man’s empire is a catalogue of songs; the other’s is cement, aluminium, paint and phone networks. They are mirror images of ambition at the same global scale, and that, plus the pairing habits of the internet, is the whole of the connection.

Personal Lives

Post Malone has lived since 2019 in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, a long way from the Los Angeles industry that made him famous. His father remains the family’s public voice when one is needed, and Malone credits him, and the records he played at home, for the range that defines his music. Malone’s daughter was born in May 2022. She is a minor, her name has never been publicly disclosed, and she appears in this article in words only; his country album includes a song, Yours, written for her. He and the girl’s mother separated at the end of 2024, and a custody arrangement was settled privately in November 2025. In August 2026 he became engaged again, proposing to the stylist Christy Lee at his Utah ranch.

Kumar Birla married Neerja Birla in 1989. Neerja is a public figure in her own right in education and mental health: she chairs the Aditya Birla Education Trust and in 2016 founded Mpower, an initiative working to remove the stigma around mental illness in India and to provide support and treatment. The couple have three children, and the eldest has built the most public career of the three.

His eldest daughter, Ananya Birla, founded a microfinance company, Svatantra Microfin, at the age of 17, lending small sums to rural women, and built it into a significant institution. In parallel she made a second career as a singer-songwriter, recording English-language songs and collaborating with international artists, the one member of the family whose work sits anywhere near Malone’s world, though the two have no documented connection either. She now chairs Svatantra and sits on group boards.

His son, Aryaman, took the family’s most unusual route: professional cricket. He played first class cricket for Madhya Pradesh, scoring a century against Bengal at Eden Gardens, and was bought by the Rajasthan Royals at the 2018 Indian Premier League auction, though he never played an IPL match. In December 2019 he stepped away from the game indefinitely, speaking publicly about the severe anxiety he had experienced in the sport, a candour that drew wide support. He has since moved into the family business, and in March 2026 he became chairman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the team his family’s consortium had just bought. The youngest Birla child, Advaitesha, keeps a low public profile.

Philanthropy runs through both generations of the family’s public life. In 1999 Kumar Birla founded the Aditya Birla Scholarship in his father’s memory, and during the pandemic in 2020 the group contributed 500 crore rupees to relief efforts. It is the same instinct that put his mother at the head of the group’s community work: the family presents its fortune as a trust held for the wider public, a philosophy it traces back to G. D. Birla and Gandhi.

What They Share, and What They Do Not

Set side by side, the two stories rhyme in clear ways:

  • Both men built global careers by crossing boundaries others respected, Malone across genres, Birla across industries and borders.
  • Both were shaped decisively by their fathers, one by a DJ’s record collection, the other by an early death that handed him an empire at 28.
  • Both keep their young children almost entirely out of public view while living very public professional lives.
  • Both have used their money to buy into worlds they love, Malone into games and cards, the Birla group into cricket.

The differences are just as clear:

  • Malone is a self-made performer whose wealth and fame are his own creation; Birla inherited a family story that began in 1857 and has led it for three decades.
  • Malone’s work is measured in streams and stadium tickets; Birla’s in cement tonnage, aluminium and phone subscribers.
  • Malone has never won the biggest prize in his industry, the Grammy, despite 18 nominations; Birla has collected his country’s highest honours, including the Padma Bhushan.
  • They have no documented meeting, partnership, investment or family link of any kind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Post Malone and Kumar Birla connected in any way?

No. There is no documented connection between them: no meeting, no business deal, no investment, no sponsorship and no family link. Post Malone is an American recording artist; Kumar Birla is the Indian chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. Their names are paired by comparison websites, not by any event in either man’s life.

Has Post Malone ever won a Grammy?

No. He is one of the most nominated performers never to have won: 18 Grammy nominations across his career, including eight in a single night in 2025 for his work with Taylor Swift and Beyoncé and for his country album F-1 Trillion, and no wins. His commercial record is separate and enormous, including nine Diamond singles.

Did Post Malone perform in India, and was Kumar Birla involved?

Malone performed in India in December 2025, in a reported first solo headline concert in Guwahati. No Aditya Birla Group company had any reported role in the concert, and there is no report of the two men meeting in India or anywhere else. The concert is the closest their worlds have come, and it is not a connection.

How did Kumar Birla become chairman at 28?

His father, Aditya Vikram Birla, who had taken the family group global, died of prostate cancer in October 1995 at the age of 51. Kumar, then 28, with a commerce degree, a chartered accountancy qualification and a London Business School MBA behind him, succeeded him as chairman of the entire group. He later described the period in an India Today interview titled “I had no choice but to grow up fast.”

What does the Aditya Birla Group own?

It is one of India’s largest conglomerates. Its best known businesses include UltraTech, India’s largest cement maker; Hindalco and its American subsidiary Novelis in aluminium; Grasim; Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail; a major stake in the phone company Vodafone Idea; and newer consumer brands including Birla Opus paints and Indriya jewellery. The World Economic Forum puts its revenue at about $72 billion across 41 countries.

Why are Post Malone and Kumar Birla searched together?

Because comparison and biography websites pair prominent names and readers follow the pairing, not because anything links the two men. There is no shared event, company or acquaintance behind it. The genuine interest in the pairing is the contrast: a self-made American star who crossed every genre in music, and an Indian heir who rebuilt a 19th-century family empire for a global century.

Conclusion

Post Malone and Kumar Birla are not partners, relatives or collaborators, and this article has not pretended otherwise. One was a teenager in Texas with a guitar and a borrowed stage name, who now holds nine Diamond singles and sang at a World Cup final. The other was a 28-year-old accountant with an MBA who buried his father and took charge of an empire, and who at 59 is still expanding it into paint, jewellery and cricket.

Read together, they bookend the ways a modern fortune gets built: created from nothing in public, or inherited in grief and rebuilt in public. That contrast, and nothing more hidden, is why their names travel together.
